I was fortunate to arrange to complete some of my internship hours at Hocutt-Ellington Memorial Library, a public library located in the town of Clayton in Johnston County, North Carolina. Working at this site offered a different perspective on the work of a librarian. In dealing with patrons of all ages and with varied information goals, I learned quite a bit about the variety of materials needed to serve a public library. I was able to participate in reference interviews, readers’ advisories, and a variety of back-office operations, including processing the book reserve lists, creating shelf displays, weeding, shelf-reading, and the rearrangement of the library lay-out. There are some similarities but, where the school library focuses on supporting the curriculum and training students to be proficient consumers of education, the public library serves the interests and information needs of the community and supports the principles of democracy by providing information about various and divergent political and philosophical viewpoints.
